Based in Columbus, Ohio, Ben Sostrom’s primary media are wood and paper, having been introduced to them while woodworking with his grandfather as a child. A graduate of The Ohio State University's Departments of Theatre (2010) and Astronomy (2011), Mr. Sostrom has spent 20 years as an actor and props designer for theatre and film, during which he honed his skills building worlds using unconventional materials and techniques. In his sculpture, he blends elements of his scientific and theatre backgrounds with dramatic use of light and form to explore elements of the natural world, from the microscopic to the cosmic. His work will be shown in the upcoming Ohio Designer Craftsmen “Best of 2024” exhibition, and in High Road Gallery's upcoming June 2024 show "Window Views". He has previously been the subject of the Studios on High Gallery solo shows “Warehoused” (April 2023), “These Are Not for You” (May 2021), and “beingnonbeing” (February 2018), and has been exhibited in shows and spaces throughout the city, including “Columbus in Cuba | Cuba in Columbus” exhibition (October 2019), “Tying Up Loose Ends” at the Upper Arlington Concourse Gallery (November 2019), “Forged: The Art of the Idea Foundry” at PatronArt’s L-Gallery (June 2019), and the Big Local Art Tent at the Columbus Arts Festival (2017, 2018). His work has been featured in Columbus Alive (“Ben Sostrom encourages animal collaboration on ‘These Are Not For You’”, 5/4/2021), Columbus Monthly (“Cork It”, April 2014), Fox 28 (“Made Local”, March 2014) and Columbus Underground (“Artist carving unique miniatures of iconic Columbus buildings”, 12/15/2013).
